Introduction to Laser Gum Surgery

In the world of cosmetic dental procedures, gum depigmentation stands out as a sought-after treatment for those looking to lighten dark gums and enhance their overall appearance. While options like laser treatment have long been utilized to target and reduce gum pigmentation, it’s essential to examine the downsides of such a method. Laser gum depigmentation, although popular, comes with its fair share of drawbacks, including the potential for uneven treatment results, the possibility of the pigmentation returning, and notably lengthy surgery times.

Understanding Laser Gum Surgery

Laser gum surgery for depigmentation is a cosmetic dental procedure designed to lighten the color of the gums for those with dark or splotchy gums. Using focused laser energy, the treatment targets the darker gum tissue, vaporizing the pigmented layers in the hope they will grow back uniformly pink. This procedure is touted for its precision compared to more invasive methods like a scalpel or chemicals.

Potential for Operator Error

One of the primary concerns with laser treatment is its risk of delivering uneven results. The precision of the laser depends heavily on the operator’s skill, and even with the most steady hands, achieving perfectly uniform depigmentation can be challenging. This variability can lead to areas that are either over or under-treated, resulting in a less than satisfactory aesthetic outcome.

Figure 1: Modern lasers require operators to maintain a 30º angle and 1 mm distance from the gums in order to get an even result. Any closer than 1mm or angling the device too sharply and the connective tissue below can be destroyed leading to scarring. Any further out than 1 mm and any shallower of an angle and the pigment causing melanocytes below the surface layer won’t be destroyed leading to returning pigment. The result of this is a form of “pointillism” where the doctor must zap one dot after another such as a Georges Seurat painting. The precision necessary for laser gum surgery increases the procedure time and potential for mistakes.

Figure 2: These lasers are designed to essentially “burn off” or vaporize the outer layer of tissue that contains the melanocyte cells that produce melanin. However, they are not designed to limit how deep they can go or into what type of tissue. The lasers will effectively cut through layers of connective tissue that are intertwined like velcro within the outer epithelial layer. Unlike the epithelial layer (the darker red tissue) the connective tissue (represented by the white and pink marbled tissue tucked below and between the red in the graphic) will never grow back once it is removed. This destruction of the connective tissue can lead to deep scarring and uneven healing.

Returning Pigmentation and Long Procedure Times

The potential for returning pigmentation is another significant drawback of laser treatments. Deeper melanocytes – the cells responsible for pigmentation – can remain unaffected. Over time, these cells can repopulate the treated areas, leading to the reemergence of dark spots or an overall darkening of the gums once again.

Due to the fine detail necessary to get a uniform result, Laser treatments can be lengthy and, for many patients, daunting. The thought of sitting through a prolonged laser procedure, coupled with the anticipation of the recovery process, can deter many individuals from choosing this option.

The Britegums Difference

Enter Britegums, a pioneering and minimally invasive solution that addresses the limitations of laser gum depigmentation with uniform efficiency and life long outcomes. Unlike laser treatments, Britegums utilizes patented radio-wave technology that targets and effectively removes the melanocytes responsible for gum pigmentation. The Britegums technology allows our providers to brush over the effected area instead of dot-by-dot like the pointillism of lasers. This innovative approach reduces the potential for human error and ensures results are not only uniform but also permanent, significantly reducing the chances of any pigmentation making a return.

Eliminating Potential for Human Error

Britegums patented radio wave technology is “self-limiting” meaning it will not cut into the connective tissue below the top epithelial layer. It safely and gently peels back the epithelial layer like velcro, removing the melanocytes and leaving the connective tissue untouched. This means, unlike lasers, Britegums’ Electrobrushes do not need to be held at a particular distance or angle in order to produce quality results. This technology greatly increases patient safety, reduces the potential for scarring, and ensures a uniform result.

Safety and Convenience through Innovation

Safety and comfort are paramount with Britegums, offering a virtually painless experience that stands in sharp contrast to the often uncomfortable laser procedures. The Britegums process is swift, often taking less than half an hour, allowing patients to achieve their desired aesthetic without the daunting time commitment associated with laser treatments. Post-procedure, patients can expect a smooth and speedy recovery, often requiring nothing more than simple over-the-counter pain relief for a few days.

Conclusion

While laser gum depigmentation may offer a pathway to lighter gums, the benefits of choosing Britegums are clear. From the assurance of even and permanent results to the comfort and swift convenience of the procedure, Britegums emerges as the superior choice for those on a quest for a brighter, healthier-looking smile.
